Northern Region Update – May, June 2017

Geoff wood, Acting RCM Northern Region

It was nice to see some lovely weather in May but unfortunately it did not last and the rain came down on the first two northern shows. However this did not spoil the days.

Reserve champion – Clive Richardson

Next to come was our open day in early June which attracted a good turnout, around 75 people. The weather was good and everyone had a good day with some positive discussions on flock competitions and Tay-Sachs. Our thanks to all who attended and all who helped to put on a wonderful day.

Our next show was the Royal Cheshire in scorching temperatures on 30°C which saw Clive Richardson win the championship and ourselves the reserve, this was out of some really strong class and quality of sheep. This good weather saw us get some really good hay before we set off to the Royal Highland Show where the weather deteriorated on Friday but saw Connor & Dalrymple take the championship and young Adam Christie the reserve. Now we are getting ready for the Great Yorkshire Show this next week, so hopefully will see a lot of you there.

Thanks to everybody once again for your help on our open day.

Geoff Wood

Welcome to new members, Mr and Mrs Ian Bond.

Open Day held by courtesy of the Saxby Family near Long Preston on Sunday May 27th

The Saxby family invited us to view their Jolly flock of two and four horned Jacob sheep and some of the renowned prize-winning Saxone Jersey cattle at their lovely home where we were blessed with a beautiful sunny May day.

The courtyard provided the perfect setting for coffee, lunch, the photographic and fleece judging competitions.  Jacob and Jersey judging was held in the nearby buildings

An excellent lunch was followed by the ever popular auction so ably conducted by Gavin – assisted by wife Becky and Clive Richardson.
Clive also very generously donated a well stocked plant stall to boost the regions funds.

A memorable day with a lovely friendly atmosphere – thanks to all the Saxby family for their hospitality and hard work

Spring AGM

The Spring AGM  was held on Sunday 19th February at the usual venue, the Fox & Hounds, Langthorpe, near Boroughbridge.  Attendance was down due to many members lambing, but around twenty attended.  Following a lively and productive meeting a very good lunch was once again provided at a most reasonable cost.

After lunch Mrs Janet Sheard from Massey Feeds gave a short talk on ewe nutrition. To view the meeting minutes please click here.

Northern Region Xmas party 2011

at Fox and Hounds Langthorpe

A well attended lunch was enjoyed by a very happy gathering of Northern members – an excellent three course meal was followed by games (!) – organised by Becky Haworth and Kathleen Lowther amidst much laughter.  A good start to Christmas.

Two Major Awards

Howard Walsh, until recently Northern Region Representative and owner of the Thornley flock in our region, has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to agricultural journalism.  He was unanimously named winner of the Netherthorpe Award for 2011 which was presented by the Princess Royal at a Guild of Agricultural journalists lunch in London.

Howard has worked for Farmers Guardian for over 40 years, holding the position of Business Editor for the past eight years.  One of his nominees wrote “his work is informative, precise and accurate in providing the vital link between the happenings and practicalities of modern farming with the need for wider readership to understand its function”

Congratulations to Howard from all in the Northern Region!

Richard Schofield, who some will remember gave a talk at the AGM last year in the Northern Region, has been awarded the prestigious ‘2011 Shearing Personality of the Year’ at the British Isles Shearing Competition Association AGM. Colin MacGregor, who presented the award said “he stands out amongst the shearing instructors and has great respect from the shearing fraternity”

Richard, a shearing instructor for the British Wool Marketing Board, judges shearing competitions, is also a builder and roofer and keeps a flock of 160 sheep as a hobby.

Northern Autumn Meeting

held Sunday October 30th at the Fox & Hounds Langthorpe

The first meeting ably conducted by our new Northern Representative Gavin Haworth, was very well attended and most constructive.  It was lovely to see new members attending and some of the old faces re-appearing.

An excellent lunch preceded our guest speaker, Mr Jonathan Stockton of Kingsway Veterinary Group, Skipton, who gave a very informative and interesting talk about worming and wormer resistance.  Questions about this and other topics followed and I think everyone agreed it was a most enjoyable ‘get-together’

Stephen Dodsworth brought some of his four horned sheep for a useful judges’ seminar overseen by regional field officer Dennis Lowther. Ron, Florence and family had gone to a lot of effort getting the place ready and competitions organised – including ‘guess the weight’ of the lambs with two nice Lleyn x Jacobs from John Fozzard. A local shearer gave a demonstration of machine shearing (Trevor and Pat Black brought most of their ewes for short back and sides !)
We were blessed with fine weather and treated to a superb lunch in the marquee – all in all an excellent day.

4 shearlings were placed in the judging competition
